As my first post I’m posting my most recent find: a comparable dress found on the higher-priced Victoria’s Secret website has a twin at Forever21. There is a version on Victoria’s Secret with the same turtleneck style but the price remains the same at $69.
My tips for online shopping:
1. Good photography makes anything look great. Even this orange.
Looking at the photographs you may notice a difference in material quality. However, Victoria’s Secret has a bit more invested in photography and photo re-touching making the product seem a lot richer than its counterpart. But think about it: when was the last time you ordered something from online it looked like its photo? Exactly.
2. Read the fine print. Especially about materials.
In the details, they are both made of acrylic. Victoria’s Secret has an imported blend of acrylic and wool. But you’re paying for that wool at a whopping $55.20 extra.
3. Do the math: decide what is more important to you and how you can get more of that.
Look at the length. The “tunic” shown in Forever21 appears a bit longer on the model than Victoria’s “sweaterdress.” Taking into account the average height of a model is 5’10”, Forever’s would still be noticeably longer than Victoria’s. You can interpret whether this is good or bad in terms of vampiness or material cost-effectiveness.
Overall you do lose the knitting detail and the added warmth of wool but in my book I’d go for the cheaper version!
